40 Great Horn-Driven CDs

TOP-40-250.gif2008 marks the 40th year for Tower of Power. The actual turning point on the calendar is August 13th, 2008 when the band will enter its 41st year of East Bay Funk and Soul.

While the band continues to tour at a steady pace, it has been a while since Tower has released its last CD, Oakland Zone (2003). Per Emilio Castillo, Tower’s venerable leader, Tower’s next release, a compilation of classic soul songs, is due out in the next 1-2 months. The CD will not come out on a commercial record label, but rather will be released by Tower on its own label.

Core Tower of Power often lament the lack of new material from the band; however, at Soul Music News we find other reasons to celebrate. Tower’s strong suite over the long term, is its inspiration of other bands, musicians, and composers.

In that spirit, on a frequent basis, this year, Soul Music News is going to present music reviews of CDs by horn-driven soul, funk and jazz bands that we think will entertain fans of Tower of Power. Quite simply, you can’t have too much good music from this genre, but you have to know about. You have to hear it. And then, you should own it.
