Tom Politzer: Sitting In, with Santa Fe & The Fat City Horns

Sep 23, 2008 in Concerts & Festivals, Local Horn Bands

Tom-Politzer-santa-fe.jpgTower of Power, lead tenor, Tom Politzer must have enjoyed the band’s 3-night gig at the Suncoast Hotel & Casino.

He stayed in Las Vegas, at least one more night, and sat in with Santa Fe and The Fat City Horns, at the Palms Hotel & Casino.

Saturday night, Emilio Castillo gave a shout-out to Santa Fe, and encouraged Tower fans to go check them out. Those that did, enjoyed Tom, and several other outstanding musicians that sat in.

Rocco Prestia rocks with Santa Fe

Sep 13, 2008 in Concerts & Festivals, Local Horn Bands

Tower of Power’s bassist, Francis ‘Rocco’ Prestia, has been a Las Vegas resident for over a year. When he’s not on the road with Tower, he frequently stops in to hear Santa Fe and The Fat City Horns on Monday nights at The Palms.

Last Monday evening was at The Palms, not just to listen… to sit in.

Rocco stepped in for three songs: Get Yo’ Feet Back on the Ground, What Is Hip?, and Wishing Well. It was a very energetic performance. Rocco rarely sits in with anyone, so it was quite a surprise.

If you’re attending the Tower of Power shows at the Suncoast Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, next weekend, maybe you should stay through to Monday night and visit The Palms to hear Santa Fe. Never can tell who might be sitting in.

Monday night at the Palms, Las Vegas is ‘THE’ Place

Aug 22, 2008 in Concerts & Festivals, Local Horn Bands, Milestones, Tower of Power at 40

When Santa Fe & The Fat City Horns began performing at the Lounge, in the Palms Hotel, about two years ago, leader, Jerry Lopez explained to me that he only would guest musicians sitting in, on a planned basis. Let’s just say things have evolved… and it’s all good.

For openers, Jerry is the Musical Director for the Wayne Brady Show and that creates a time crunch. On some nights, Jerry is unable to arrive until 15 minutes after the scheduled showtime of 10:30pm. He has found a way to turn that into a huge positive by reaching into the deep pool of Las Vegas guitarists, and asking one of them to sit in for three tunes to open the show. The past Monday, the featured guitarist was David Hart. It’s always a surprise, and it’s always good.

Beyond that wrinkle, Jerry has embraced spontaneity by inviting musicians to sit in, creating some great magic moments, on a regular basis.

Jerry has been in attendance at the Herman Matthews & Friends show, Saturday night at the Bootlegger. Some of the band returned the compliment, and came down to see Santa Fe at the Palms. Guitarist, Brian Munroney was the first to sit in. As Jerry noted to the audience, Brian is one of those rare cats who can play rhythm and lead, equally well. We also learned that he had written all the horn charts for Herman’s band.

Next up was Herman Matthews, sitting in on Wishing Well. Then it was Bill Churchville, who brought his trumpet to the stage, and played the entire second half of the set with Santa Fe. Some of the vocalists from Mosaic joined in the fun, and Michito Sanchez found his way up to the congas, alongside Gabriel Falcon. At one point, the on stage presence rivaled a George Clinton P-Funk show with 19 musicians and vocalists.

This was not just a jam session. Churchville didn’t just solo, he played some of Santa Fe’s originals, reading their charts, cold.

When Santa Fe played their penultimate song, Chuckii Booker’s Soul Trilogy, Herman Matthews couldn’t contain himself. He jumped on stage, sharing a mic with Lenny Lopez. Herman was jumpin’ and bumpin’, having the time of his life.

Let’s put it this way, if one lives in Las Vegas, it’s a privilege to able to head down to the Palms on any Monday and see what unfolds. If you’re planning a trip to Las Vegas, you need to stay through Monday night, come on down, and see what all the fuss is about. Reading about it, just does not do it justice.

40 CDs for Tower of Power Fans #7: Doctorfunk - Prescription for Soul

May 18, 2008 in CDs & DVDs, Interviews, Local Horn Bands, Tower of Power at 40

doctorfunk.jpgFrom the Northwest United States, a region long known for producing energetic and fresh musical talent, blazes the Emerald City’s latest sensation, Seattle’s own DoctorfunK.

DoctorfunK was established in 1995 and has set the standard for new soul music in the Pacific Northwest. Echoing the legendary passion of famed horn band, Tower of Power and that “East Bay Soul Sound,” this 10-piece ensemble has maintained that tradition and more.

“Prescription for Soul” contains sophisticated arrangements hand led by a seasoned, tight, five-piece horn section, with powerful vocals and an extremely well “greased” rhythm section. All combine to deliver the deepest of grooves and smoothest of ballads.

DoctorfunK deserves a listen and a place in your CD collections of the finest in soul and funk music.

This CD is an amalgam of original compositions, cover tunes, studio recordings and live performances. It features the Tower of Power tribute song, ‘Livin in Bump City’ and the previously unreleased Kupka-Castillo-Holt composition, ‘Step Up To The Plate.’

Buy this CD at CD BabyAdd to that, musical appearances by Mic Gillette and Jeff Tamelier, plus guest vocals by Fred Ross, and this CD is the complete package.

If you haven’t heard it by this point, you’re overdue. You can preview all the tracks and buy the disc at CD Baby. >>

40 CDs for Tower of Power Fans #6: Mingo Fishtrap - Yesterday

May 15, 2008 in CDs & DVDs, Local Horn Bands, Tower of Power at 40

Mingo Fishtrap YesterdayMingo Fishtrap describes their music as ‘N’Awlins Gutbucket Funk meets Oakland Soul.’ In fact, that’s a pretty good description. It’s what you might imagine if you crossed Tower of Power with the Neville Brothers.

The band’s third, full length CD is titled, Yesterday. Yesterday, is 14 tracks of new material that overflows with groove and feeling. These are finely crafted pop songs that draw on traditions spanning the range of American music, yet the result is not random eclecticism. Mingo has focused their many musical influences into a unique, exciting and timeless sound.

New Orleans funk and fun is at the heart of this music, from the latin-tinged “On Our Way” to the Afro-swamp instrumental “Fred’s Slacks” to the second-line intro of “Catch The Bus”. Mingo’s East Bay grease comes through on the horn-driven tunes like “Let The Games Begin”. Hints of old Buy this CD at CD Babyschool R&B in the style of Otis Redding are everywhere, but these are children of the 1980’s and can’t resist some house music. The vibe is irresistible: a blend of rhythm, surprise, charm and plain old-fashioned great sounds!
